Hot Stone Massage

This is an extremely popular treatment for clients to receive and practitioners to give.  The technique works by using warm basalt stones which enable the muscles to relax more quickly and deeply than conventional massage techniques.

This very popular Hot Stone Massage Course offers a major benefit for you as a Holistic Body Massage Therapist in that it helps protects your body from repetitive strain (RSI).   You will be using your hands in a different way, applying pressure with the stones and using a variety of movements, therefore protecting your finger, wrist and hand joints.

This course is designed for qualified practitioners of body massage and therefore can be used for your CPD credits.

We are also teaching a one day Advanced Hot Stone Massage Workshop for practitioners who need to refresh their Hot Stone Massage skills and/or for practitioners to add new skills to their Hot Stone Massage once they have been using it for a while.

Benefits of Hot Stone Massage

  • Soporific, soothing, calming, nurturing, etc. (it is much slower than normal massage)
  • Improves blood flow – promotes healinghot stone 1 221x300 Hot Stone Massage
  • Decreases muscle spasm
  • Analgesic effect on surrounding tissues
  • Increases elasticity (pizza cheese)
  • Faster results
  • Lasts longer
  • More cost efficient for the client

The heat works to dilate the blood capillaries which in turn promotes healing because blood brings oxygen and nutrition to the body’s cells and takes away the waste products.  It is because of this that the Hot Stones have a detoxing effect too.

The beneficial results of massage are quicker because you don’t have to warm your client up first.  As a practitioner, this can mean that you are able to offer shorter and therefore more affordable treatments as they don’t take so long to achieve the same results The heat reaches deeper into the muscles, softens the fascia helps it stretch.

The stones used in Hot Stone Massage consist of Basalt, which is a volcanic rock, and the most likely origin of this treatment is therefore from people or tribes living near volcanoes who discovered that the hot rocks had therapeutic and healing benefits. Basalt has a high mineral content, particularly Iron, which is what enables it to maintain the heat for long periods of time.

Course Tutor

Heather Edwards

“When I first tried hot stones, I felt completely enveloped in the heat, even when the stones were only used on parts of my body.  It was an all embracing sensation, without being the overwhelming heat that you can sometimes feel from a hot bath or a sauna.  I was totally sold on the whole thing, and decided straight away that I wanted to learn how to use hot stones and take this wonderful feeling to other people.  I trained in how to use the stones both therapeutically and remedially, and have never looked back.

Clients report amazing benefits from the stones.  Some people are really receptive to heat, and respond dramatically, in terms of healing, from the extra dimension of the heat.  Many of my clients have converted over to the stones for all their treatments.  And on top of that, as a very busy full time therapist, hot stones have given me a fantastic tool with which to save my hands from repetitive strain. It gives me enormous pleasure to pass these skills onto other therapists, so that their clients and themselves can likewise benefit.”

Advanced Hot Stone Massage Workshop

This advanced Hot Stone Massage workshop is for practitioners that have already completed a Hot Stone Massage Course (with us or with another college).  It is designed to expand on the skills you have learnt and update and refresh your Hot Stone Massage techniques.

The Advanced Hot / Cold Stone one day course is designed for those massage therapists who have already under gone some training in hot stones and have practical experience of the medium.
The course aims to take you beyond a therapeutic routine and into a more remedial arena, where you will be able to use the stones to address common body problems such as low back ache, upper back tension, repetitive strain injury, frozen shoulder, and much more.
We will use cold as well as hot stones, examining the healing theories of alternate vaso-dilation and constriction as well as the use of purely cold stones for acute injuries.  You will gain an understanding of how to use the cold stones for reducing inflammations and swellings, as well as making your massage refreshing and invigorating.
The course introduces side-lying stone work and demonstrates ways to incorporate hot and cold stones into pregnancy massage.
The course focuses on remedial work for:

  • tension in the upper back
  • tightness in the neck, chest and shoulder girdle
  • aches  in the mid-back
  • low back pain
  • tight calves, Achilles, plantar fascia
  • forearm repetitive strain

The course will also give you some extra techniques generally for working through the body, and introduce the use of hands as well as stones for an overall seamless remedial treatment.
